Caring for Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring requires a certain amount of care and maintenance to ensure that it looks good for years to come. Caring for your new hardwood flooring begins by treating it properly every day.

  • Use protective mats — By collecting oil, asphalt, driveway sealer, gravel, and other chemicals and abrasives before they reach the hardwood, mats can prolong its life. Be sure to use approved vinyl underlayment to avoid damaging the flooring with rubber- or foam-backed mats.
  • Use furniture floor protectors — Minimize indentations and scratches by using floor protectors. Wider protectors are better for heavier furniture.
  • Practice humidity management — Hardwood flooring responds best when the relative humidity is between 45% and 65% throughout the year. During the dry heating season (winter), a humidifier can prevent excess shrinkage. During the wet summer season, your air conditioner or a dehumidifier can keep the moisture at the proper level.
  • Avoid sharp objects — Avoid wearing stiletto-style heels, golf shoes, or sports cleats on the hardwood floor. Take care to not drop sharp objects. Keep your pet's nails trimmed, as well.
  • Periodically rearrange furniture and area rugs — Moving the rugs and furniture allows the floor to age evenly as UV light causes the tone to soften.
  • Protect the floor when moving heavy objects — If you need to move furniture or appliances across the hardwood, lay down a sheet of quarter-inch plywood or Masonite first. Do not roll or slide heavy objects across hardwood flooring.

It's also important to clean your hardwood flooring properly. Cleaning it improperly could damage the wood or void the warranty.

  • Clean up spills as soon as you can — Avoid letting liquids remain on the floor, especially substances that can stain it (oil, paint, markers, lipstick, ink, tar, or cigarette marks). For some stains, blotting with acetone (nail polish remover) on a clean white cloth is best, followed by a cloth dampened by water.
  • Sweep, dust, or vacuum often — Be sure to use products and attachments designed for hardwood flooring. Avoid using the vacuum cleaner's beater bar.
  • Wipe the floor with a damp mop or cloth — Avoid using too much water.
  • Use specialty cleaning products — Periodically use Shaw's R2X Hard Surfaces Flooring Cleaner or other products formulated for hardwood.
  • Avoid all of the following:
  • Products or cleaners that include oil, wax, polish, ammonia, or abrasives
  • Steel wool or scouring powder
  • Soap, oil-soap detergent, and other liquid cleaning materials
  • Any type of buffing machine

If you need to remove gum or candle wax, harden the material with ice. Then scrape it gently with a plastic scraper (such as a credit card), taking care to avoid scratching the flooring. Wipe the area with a damp cloth. If you have any questions about taking care of your hardwood flooring, please call Modern Home Floor Covering.

Professional Hardwood Flooring Installation

You can rely on Modern Home Floor Covering for expert installation of hardwood flooring. We have over 50 years of experience, so your floor will look absolutely fantastic.

To make your flooring installation go smoothly, please consider the following points.

  • Who is removing the existing flooring? If it's the team installing the new flooring, be sure they know. If you or someone else is doing it, schedule enough time to have it completely out before the installers arrive.
  • Who is moving the furniture? This is something else to address with the installation team ahead of time. In any case, it's wise to remove all fragile items from the room yourself.
  • How thick is the new flooring? If the new flooring is thicker than the old flooring, you may have problems with doors opening and closing correctly. Plan ahead to have someone shave the correct amount off the bottom of any door to prevent it from dragging.
  • Remodel first. Avoid potentially damaging your beautiful new hardwood flooring by doing any painting, wallpapering, or other remodeling before the flooring is installed.
  • Plan the layout of the room. Hardwood flooring is typically installed to run parallel with the windows or (in narrow rooms) along the longest wall. Placing it perpendicular to the floor joists increases its stability.

Once installation begins, we take several steps to ensure that you get the best results possible and a new floor that looks beautiful and performs well over time.

  • Floor and subfloor evaluation — Our expert will examine your floor and subfloor. If anything needs to be done to prepare it (such as using a leveling compound or replacing the subfloor), we'll let you know.
  • Moisture testing — To prevent your new flooring from developing cups, buckles, or gaps, it's important to test the moisture of the subfloor and acclimate the new material properly. This is true for both solid and engineered hardwood.
  • Installation — You'll see us nail or glue boards in place as needed. We'll work from multiple cartons to create consistency in your floor's appearance. You can depend on our experienced installers to overcome any problems we may encounter.
